Brazilian President Lula stated on the 3rd that Brazil will continue to seek other commercial partners to minimize the negative impact of US trade policies. According to the Brazilian news agency, Lula made the statement at a ministerial meeting held at the Planalto Palace in Brazil. He said, "If the US doesn't want to buy, we will sell to countries that do. We won't complain about it. If they don't want to invest here, we will find someone else." Lula emphasized that Brazil is an independent country and will not bow down to major powers. Lula also mentioned at the meeting that he has decided to attend the G7 summit in France in June, which was not originally in his plans. The Brazilian news agency reported that on the 1st, the US Trade Representative's Office proposed imposing a 25% tariff on certain Brazilian products imported into the US, among other measures. This report is the result of an investigation initiated by the Trump administration a year ago to determine whether Brazil engaged in what the US considers to be "unfair practices" in trade with the US. The Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade, and Services stated that the US tariff decision directly threatens 21% of Brazil's total exports to the US market.
