According to an alliance made up of American business groups, the global shortage of storage chips triggered by the AI boom is posing an increasingly serious risk to various industries, including automotive manufacturers and medical equipment producers. The alliance has urged the Trump administration to assist in increasing the supply of these critical components. On Wednesday, nine representatives from trade associations across various industries wrote a letter to US Treasury Secretary Mnuchin and Commerce Secretary Ross warning that the shortage of storage chips could disrupt critical supply chains and potentially drive up consumer prices in the short term. The alliance pointed out that the expansion of AI data centers has disproportionately consumed storage chip production capacity, leading to "unprecedented increases in storage chip prices and a significant reduction in the supply of storage chips for the manufacturing and consumer markets." In the letter, industry groups urged the Trump administration to collaborate with storage chip manufacturers and purchasers to expand production capacity within the United States and its allied jurisdictions. They also suggested utilizing trade agreement mechanisms or relevant programs like the "Chip Act" to ensure supply chain security and focus on safeguarding supply in various market segments.
