The Trump administration has adjusted the tariff rules for importing copper products into the United States, making it easier for importers to obtain favorable treatment related to metal production in the United States. According to an announcement published in the Federal Register on Wednesday, the US government has adjusted the import tariff rules for aluminum, steel, and copper. The announcement maintains the 50% tariff rate for some copper products, but lowers the standard for products identified as using 100% American copper raw materials. Previously, in order for a product to be identified as American-made, at least 95% of the copper content had to be smelted and cast in the United States. This threshold has now been lowered to 85%. The announcement also expands the coverage of products, including some electrical conductors and cable products, to be included in the list of goods subject to tariffs under Section 232.
