The sharp increase in youth unemployment in the UK could lead to the emergence of a "lost generation," and urgent action is needed to reverse this "system-wide failure." In the next five years, the number of young people not in education, employment, or training is expected to rise from the current approximately 1 million to 1.25 million. An assessment commissioned by the government and led by former Labour Health Minister Alan Milburn found that 84% of NEET youth surveyed expressed a desire for work or training opportunities but were unable to achieve them, as the current system has failed to successfully assist them in participating in the labor market.
