Recently, there have been reports that BYD is interested in acquiring a stake in the Alpine racing team and is also interested in taking over Renault's engine factory in France. When asked for confirmation, a BYD spokesperson only replied, "There is no information to disclose at the moment." However, Li Ke, Executive Vice President of BYD Group, admitted during the 2026 Beijing Auto Show that BYD is in substantial talks to enter Formula 1, and has met with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, with both parties "maintaining close communication." Currently, the Alpine racing team is 76% owned by the Renault Group and 24% owned by the private equity fund OtroCapital. OtroCapital is actively seeking a buyer for its shares, with the agreement stipulating a three-year lock-up period before they can be transferred. This lock-up period will expire in September 2026, at which time the related shares will enter a tradable window. It is understood that there are about three to four potential buyers interested in purchasing OtroCapital's Alpine shares. The team has announced its withdrawal from the World Endurance Championship and will no longer self-develop engines from 2026, opting instead to use Mercedes power units.
