The Taiwan Affairs Office refutes Lai Ching-te's argument of unification packaged in peace.
On April 22nd, the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council held a routine press conference. A reporter asked about recent comments made by Lai Ching-te, who said that peace cannot be achieved through compromising and conceding "sovereignty" by incorporating Taiwan into the One China framework; "packaging unity with peace will bring endless troubles to Taiwan." What is your comment on this? Spokesperson Zhang Han responded by stating that Taiwan is a part of China, has never been a country, and cannot become one. There is fundamentally no such thing as "sovereignty." China is the common homeland of the Chinese people, and it is crucial for both sides of the Taiwan Strait to protect and build this common homeland by adhering to the "1992 Consensus," opposing "Taiwan independence," and recognizing that both sides belong to one China. Peace is a shared value for both sides of the Taiwan Strait, and maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is a common aspiration for both sides. The Democratic Progressive Party authorities go against mainstream public opinion, persistently stick to a separatist "Taiwan independence" stance, continuously manipulate "seeking independence by force," deliberately obstruct cross-strait exchanges and cooperation, and are the main culprits in disrupting peace in the Taiwan Strait and causing tension and instability. The future of Taiwan, the security and interests of Taiwanese compatriots, are always linked to the peaceful development of both sides of the Taiwan Strait and the reunification of the motherland. More and more Taiwanese compatriots have realized that the Lai Ching-te authorities' pursuit of "independence" will only lead to war and destruction, they firmly oppose "Taiwan independence" separatism and foreign interference, and actively seek peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
