May Day international flight cancellation rate exceeds 10%, Guangzhou is minimally affected by flight cancellations.
Less than 10 days away from the "May Day" holiday, the civil aviation market has entered a peak period for travel bookings. However, due to the recent global surge in fuel prices and the impact of geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East, many airlines have reduced their capacity, and "May Day flight cancellations" have been trending on social media platforms! According to flight management data from DAST, during the 2026 "May Day" holiday, the total planned number of civil aviation flights is 85,285, an increase of 5.25% compared to 2025, with the international flight cancellation rate soaring from 3.6% to 7.4%, and domestic airlines' international flight cancellation rate is as high as 10.7%. Behind the data discrepancy are factors such as escalating conflicts in the Middle East, soaring global aviation fuel prices, and industry proactive strategic contraction.
Looking at major cities, a source from a local travel agency in Guangzhou stated that the currently canceled flights are mainly concentrated on routes departing from some second-tier cities, with limited impact on the Guangzhou market. Southeast Asia, Europe, Central Asia, and the Caucasus region remain popular tourist destinations. Airlines are expected to further adjust flight arrangements during the peak travel season based on changes in fuel prices and market conditions. Some residents have also reported that besides the price increase in air tickets, the inflation rates in many outbound tourist destinations in recent years have led to significant increases in expenses for accommodations, dining, etc. Considering costs and safety factors, they tend to prioritize domestic travel.
