Microsoft announced on Friday that they will invest 1.6 trillion yen in Japan between 2026 and 2029 to expand artificial intelligence infrastructure and strengthen cooperation with the Japanese government in cybersecurity. The investment plan includes training 1 million engineers and developers by 2030, and was disclosed during the visit of Microsoft's Vice Chairman and President, Brad Smith, to Tokyo. Microsoft stated that they will collaborate with local Japanese companies such as Softbank Group and Sakura Internet to enhance Japan's AI computing capabilities, allowing businesses and government agencies to keep sensitive data within Japan while using Microsoft Azure services. Microsoft will also deepen intelligence sharing cooperation with relevant departments in Japan on network threats and crime prevention. According to data from Microsoft, Japan has accelerated the application of AI since 2024, with approximately one-fifth of the working-age population using generative AI tools. The Japanese government estimates that by 2040, Japan will have a talent shortage of over 3 million people in the field of AI and robotics.
