Wang Yi speaks with Bahrain's Foreign Minister Zayani over the phone.
On April 2, 2026, Wang Yi, member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China and Minister of Foreign Affairs, spoke on the phone with Zayani, the rotating chairman of the Gulf Cooperation Council and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bahrain. Zayani briefed Wang on the latest developments in the Middle East and Bahrain's position, stating that the security of the Gulf countries is facing serious challenges, with navigation in the Strait of Hormuz being disrupted. Bahrain is willing to play a role through the UN Security Council to solve the navigation issue in the strait. Bahrain hopes to enhance communication and coordination with China. Wang Yi clarified China's principle of opposing aggression and advocating for peace. He mentioned that China and Pakistan recently issued a five-point initiative to restore peace and stability in the Gulf and the Middle East, including calls for stopping attacks on civilians and non-military targets, ensuring the safety of the Strait of Hormuz, and restoring normal navigation. Ceasefire is the common call of the international community. Actions from the UN Security Council should help ease tensions, promote ceasefire and dialogue, rather than endorsing illegal acts of war or escalating conflicts. China, as a permanent member of the Security Council and a responsible major country, is willing to work together with Bahrain to promote the cessation of hostilities, restore peace, achieve lasting stability in the region, and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of small and medium-sized countries, particularly in the Global South.
