Reuters reported on March 17, citing multiple sources, that the United States is urging Syria to send troops to the east of Lebanon to assist in disarming Hezbollah, but the Syrian side is concerned about being dragged into conflict and escalating sectarian tensions, and has therefore not made a decision. Several anonymous Syrian officials and sources said that officials from the US and Syria discussed this issue last year. With recent military actions against Iran by the US and Israel, American officials have once again raised this proposal. Analysts believe that the US proposing suggestions to Syria shows that efforts to disarm Hezbollah are intensifying. However, in response to these reports, a spokesperson for the US State Department stated that they do not comment on such "private diplomatic communications."
