After the Mexican armed forces killed a leader of a major drug trafficking group on February 22nd, riots broke out in several regions of Mexico. In response to the security situation in Mexico, the U.S. State Department's Consular Affairs issued a statement on the 22nd stating that due to ongoing security operations and related road closures and criminal activities in states such as Jalisco and Michoacn, American citizens should "shelter in place until further notice." The Canadian government also issued a travel warning for Mexico on the same day, advising Canadian citizens in Mexico to keep a low profile, stay informed of the situation, and follow local government instructions. The Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also announced on that day that the overall risk level for Mexico has been raised to "high alert," and more than ten states in Mexico have been listed as "avoid non-essential travel" areas. In addition, countries such as the United Kingdom, France, and Russia have also issued related security warnings regarding Mexico.
