Nvidia has launched open-source software and models aimed at helping governments and businesses more easily utilize artificial intelligence and complex data to build their own weather forecasting systems. Nvidia stated that its new Earth-2 platform includes two AI-based weather models that can generate more accurate two-week weather forecasts and real-time weather forecasts (providing short-term forecasts six hours in advance for areas affected by storms and other severe weather). The Earth-2 platform also features a new data assimilation model. The company said that this model can quickly calculate key snapshots of Earth's temperature, wind speed, and air pressure to provide a foundation for customized forecasts. Due to the high computational requirements of weather and climate models, Nvidia has a long-standing interest in this field. The company stated that its Earth-2 technology is comparable to models released by various national meteorological agencies and Google DeepMind.
