"The scent of wonton debt floats"

In January 2026, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank once again issued a public bond with a scale of 4 billion Hong Kong dollars, attracting market attention to the niche bond variety known as "wonton bonds." Since last year, the issuance of wonton bonds has been on the rise, with both the scale and quantity of issuances increasing significantly. Industry insiders generally believe that this is due to factors such as the low interest advantage of the Hong Kong dollar, local institutional asset allocation, and the diversification of financing needs driving the trend. Wonton bonds complement dim sum bonds and are expected to further enhance the depth and breadth of the Hong Kong bond market.
