The New York Stock Exchange is leveraging blockchain technology to build a trading platform to achieve round-the-clock trading of tokenized stocks and exchange-traded funds. Executives at the Intercontinental Exchange Group's NYSE revealed that the exchange plans to combine existing buy and sell matching technology with a private blockchain network to provide real-time trading support for tokenized securities. This new digital trading platform is expected to go live later this year, pending approval from regulatory authorities. Michael Bragland, Vice President of Strategic Planning at the Intercontinental Exchange, said in an interview: "This marks the evolution of NYSE's trading capabilities from trading floors and electronic order books to blockchain technology. The new platform will broaden investors' participation channels, create new opportunities for retail investors to participate in markets funded by stablecoins that have already garnered widespread attention." He also noted that NYSE is actively communicating with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission regarding operational permits for the new platform. Some features of this digital trading infrastructure can support real-time transfer and settlement of trading funds, different from the T + 1 settlement mechanism commonly seen in the stock market. Bragland said, "We believe that this platform meets the growing demands of retail investors - they want to complete a trade at 5:04 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon and use the funds for another investment at 5:05 p.m. And this type of trading scenario is something traditional stock trading infrastructure cannot achieve." NYSE's plan is aimed at reshaping the core elements of stocks such as definition, issuance, and settlement. The success of these initiatives may determine whether tokenization can truly integrate into Wall Street's financial system. By trading volume, the New York Stock Exchange is the largest stock exchange operator in the United States.
