Trump is imposing tariffs on eight European countries because of Greenland, but it is reported that it is still unclear whether Trump will follow through with his tariff threats, especially considering that this could endanger various investments and regulatory reforms promised by EU countries and the UK in trade agreements. In the first year of Trump 2.0, he often backed down on some of the toughest tariff threats, and sometimes even if other governments did not make concessions, he would still act in this way. Just this month, Trump said he would impose a 25% tariff on countries trading with Iran, but so far he has not taken any action to enforce this threat. He has also threatened to impose tariffs of up to 200% on champagne and other alcoholic beverages, but these threats have not been implemented. It is currently unclear why the US can impose tariffs on some EU countries while exempting others. The economic group allows for free trade among its 27 member countries with a unified trade policy. Companies may try to cope with the imbalanced tariff situation within the group by exporting goods to EU member countries with lower tariffs.
