Chile holds presidential and parliamentary elections.
On November 16th local time, Chile held presidential and parliamentary elections. Voting began at 8am and ended at 6pm on the same day. Over 15 million registered voters will cast their votes to elect a new president, 23 senators, and 155 deputies. This year, there are 8 presidential candidates. Pre-election polls showed that Janette Hara, a member of the Chilean Communist Party and candidate of the left-wing governing coalition, had a relatively leading support rate. The support rates of extreme right-wing party candidate Jose Antonio Kast, emerging right-wing party candidate Johnny Kser, and traditional right-wing opposition coalition candidate Evelyn Matthei are close. According to Chilean election laws, in the presidential election, if no candidate receives over 50% of the votes, the top two candidates will enter the second round of voting on December 14th, and the candidate with the most votes will eventually win. The Chilean president serves a four-year term and cannot be re-elected.
