Internal documents from the American company "Meta" show that about 10% of its revenue in 2024, approximately $16 billion, comes from fraudulent advertisements and banned product ads, highlighting loopholes in its advertising business oversight. The internal document from Meta reveals that this social media giant has failed to identify and prevent a significant number of violations in advertisements over the past three years, exposing billions of users on its platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp to investment scams, online gambling, banned medical products, and other harmful content. According to the company's internal estimates, the platform pushes out approximately 15 billion fraudulent advertisements to users every day. Meta is aware that its products have become a significant part of the global fraud economy. According to a report from Meta's security department in May 2025, about one-third of successful fraud cases in the United States are linked to Meta. In another internal document from 2025, Meta states that they plan to reduce revenue from fraudulent advertisements in the future, but they are concerned that the decrease in this revenue stream may impact their overall business expectations. In response, a Meta spokesperson stated that they have been actively addressing the issue, emphasizing that the estimate of 10% of last year's revenue coming from fraudulent and banned product ads is "rough and overly broad," and further review found that many ads were not in violation. They also pointed out that the leaked documents provide a one-sided view and do not reflect all the measures the company is taking to address the problem.
