The black market is rampant, threatening heavyweight new drugs. Eli Lilly (LLY.US) has launched a global "anti-counterfeiting campaign" for weight loss medications.

Eli Lilly (LLY.US) is intensifying its efforts to combat the rapidly growing black market for retatrutide. Retatrutide is an experimental drug, and Eli Lilly hopes to expand its critical obesity drug business through this medication. For the past two years, Eli Lilly has been warning consumers against using counterfeit retatrutide injections sold online, at health clinics, and in medical spas. The drug has not yet received approval from any regulatory agency worldwide. Now, Eli Lilly is applying further pressure. The pharmaceutical company announced Wednesday that it plans to sue U.S. businesses illegally selling retatrutide products and is urging regulators to take more action to curb this illicit market. Eli Lilly highlighted that companies facilitating and supporting these salesincluding credit card companies, logistics firms, and social media platformsalso bear responsibility in protecting consumers, calling it an "urgent public health crisis." Max Danning, Vice President of Global Patient Safety in Eli Lilly's Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health Division, stated that tracking counterfeit retatrutide is akin to playing "whack-a-mole." According to Eli Lilly, these drugs are often produced by unregulated foreign manufacturers. In an interview, Danning remarked, "This is a huge problem, a global problem," and added, It's not something we can fix alone. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has made it clear that pharmacies compounding retatrutide are acting illegally. Since 2024, the FDA has sent warning letters to at least 16 companies claiming to sell retatrutide. However, analyses show that as of August 11, many of these companies are still selling counterfeit versions of the drug. Behind the scenes, Eli Lilly has been working for years to combat the global trade in retatrutide. The company has referred over 200 entities to the FDA, the U.S. Department of Justice, state attorneys general, law enforcement, and professional licensing boards. Eli Lilly claims to have reported over 14,000 websites, advertisements, social media posts, and product listings in more than 100 countries and regions, yet some companies continue to spread misleading information to vulnerable consumers. Eli Lilly and its competitor Novo Nordisk A/S Sponsored ADR Class B have been battling against similar counterfeit versions of their best-selling weight loss drugs, Zepbound and Wegovy. However, retatrutide has elevated this struggle to a whole new level. Since Eli Lilly announced interim study results indicating that retatrutide may be more effective than any existing weight loss drug on the market, the demand for the drug has been persistent. Since then, people across the globe have been eager to obtain black market versions, purchasing from overseas sellers who label it for "research use only" to evade regulation. On social media, the drug is referred to as "reta," "r3ta," and even "ratatouille," as people increasingly seek workarounds to overcome restrictions on weight loss-related content imposed by companies like TikTok. If approved by regulators, retatrutide is expected to generate over $5.4 billion in annual sales for Eli Lilly by 2030. However, the black market poses significant risks. Despite Eli Lilly conducting its own large-scale clinical trial programs for the drug, any safety concerns arising from counterfeit versions could threaten its reputation. The company plans to apply for FDA approval early next year. Eli Lilly noted that federal and local authorities have taken some "encouraging" actions, including a large seizure by Customs and Border Protection in Cincinnati last year. Federal prosecutors have also been tackling illegal sellers; last month, a prominent peptide company's owner selling retatrutide was sentenced to nearly six years in prison. Danning stated that Eli Lilly is also in communication with law enforcement in the UK, Brazil, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, and Hong Kong. He added that the company is urging regulators and law enforcement to prioritize enforcement actions "and coordinate across borders to dismantle the criminal networks involved in selling retatrutide."
