MasterCard (MA.US) is considering selling the majority stake in its UK payment subsidiary Vocalink back to British banks.
According to informed sources, Mastercard (MA.US) is considering reselling the majority stake of its UK payment subsidiary Vocalink to British banks in response to concerns raised by the public about this critical asset being owned by an American company.
In 2016, Mastercard acquired Vocalink from a consortium of UK banks for 701 million (approximately $937.38 million). Sources suggest that the deal involving a 51% stake could be valued at around 400 million (approximately $534.88 million).
DeliveryCo, an entity supported by several leading UK banks and payment companies, is considered a potential buyer.
Vocalink is responsible for operating the majority of retail payment systems in the UK. According to its official website, the company designs, builds, and operates account-based payment systems in the UK, processing over 90% of salaries, more than 70% of household bills, and 98% of national benefit payments.
