On August 1st, the Hong Kong Transport Department announced that in order to provide citizens with more flexibility in traveling under the "Hong Kong Cars Heading North" plan, the governments of Guangdong and Hong Kong have agreed to optimize the arrangement for reservations. A spokesperson for the Hong Kong Transport Department said that starting from September 1st, 2025, vehicles under the "Hong Kong Cars Heading North" plan will be able to travel to Guangdong province via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge on Tuesdays and Wednesdays without the need for reservations, with the exception of designated days. Designated days include public holidays in Hong Kong or mainland China and the eve of these holidays, days when tolls are waived on the bridge, and days announced by the authorities, which will require reservations for travel. Reservations will still be required on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The eligibility, procedures, and lottery arrangements for the plan remain unchanged. The Hong Kong Transport Department will update its website later to list the days for the next six months that do not require reservations, and will announce the days for the following month that do not require reservations on the first day of each month for applicants to carefully review. The department will continue to open reservations for designated days for the following month on the 15th of each month. Travelers should note that if they want to travel on designated days, they must successfully make a reservation through the "Designated Day Reservation System" by 12 noon the day before the travel day. To ensure smooth operation of the plan, the Transport Department will strictly enforce penalties for any vehicles found to have not made reservations in advance on designated days, not traveling during the reserved time, or not traveling after making a reservation. Penalties may include suspending their eligibility for reservations for a period of time, revoking their Closed Road Permit, or even suspending the permit holder from applying for the "Hong Kong Cars Heading North" plan again. The governments of Guangdong and Hong Kong will continue to monitor the operation of the "Hong Kong Cars Heading North" plan and maintain close contact, reviewing and optimizing the arrangement as needed.
