The provisional estimate of the total earnings value of restaurants in the second quarter of 2025 is HK$27.1 billion, an increase of 0.8% compared to the same period last year.
On August 1st, the Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department released the latest interim figures on the revenue and purchases of food establishments. The temporary estimate for the total revenue value of food establishments in the second quarter of 2025 is 27.1 billion Hong Kong dollars, a year-on-year increase of 0.8%. During the same period, the temporary estimate for total purchases of food establishments is 8.8 billion Hong Kong dollars, a year-on-year increase of 2.7%. After adjusting for price changes, the temporary estimate for the total revenue of food establishments in the second quarter of 2025 decreased by 0.4% compared to the same quarter of the previous year.
In terms of food establishment categories, compared to the second quarter of 2024, the total revenue of Chinese restaurants decreased by 3.8% and 5.2% in terms of value and quantity respectively. The total revenue of non-Chinese restaurants increased by 5.7% and 5.1% in terms of value and quantity respectively. The total revenue of fast food outlets increased by 2.1% and 0.7% in terms of value and quantity respectively. The total revenue of bars decreased by 2.5% and 4.1% in terms of value and quantity respectively. As for miscellaneous eating establishments, the total revenue decreased by 0.7% and 2.6% in terms of value and quantity respectively.
Compared to the previous quarter, the temporary estimate of seasonally adjusted total revenue of food establishments in the second quarter of 2025 increased by 0.2% in terms of value and 0.6% in terms of quantity.
Compared to the same period in 2024, the total revenue of food establishments in the first half of 2025 increased by 0.1% in terms of value, but decreased by 1.1% in terms of quantity.
Analyzing by month, compared to the same months in the previous year, the temporary estimate of total revenue value of food establishments in April, May, and June of 2025 increased by 0.9%, 1.8%, and decreased by 0.5% respectively.
After adjusting for price changes, compared to the same months in the previous year, the temporary estimate of total revenue of food establishments in April, May, and June of 2025 decreased by 0.2%, increased by 0.7%, and decreased by 1.6% respectively in terms of quantity.
A spokesperson for the Hong Kong government stated that the food service industry in Hong Kong saw a slight growth in the second quarter of 2025. The total revenue of food establishments increased by 0.8% year-on-year, and by 0.2% on a quarterly basis after seasonal adjustment. Looking ahead, with continued economic growth, rising employment income, and a prosperous local stock market in Hong Kong, the local consumption atmosphere will continue to be supported. The Hong Kong government's active promotion of tourism and major events will also be beneficial to the business.
