Renowned tech journalist Mark Gurman wrote that Apple (AAPL.O) is expected to launch a smart home screen device as early as next month. This product will be one of the most anticipated releases in the early days of Ternus's leadership at Apple, integrating control of all connected devices, video calls, intercom functionality, and media content, while also giving users access to Apple services and apps. The device, internally codenamed J490, will run a new operating system built around Siri AI and is currently undergoing extensive testing in Apple employees' homes. The device's screen is roughly square and can be placed on a base, resembling a HomePod mini cut in half, or mounted on a wall. A key feature of the device is facial recognition through a front-facing camera system, personalizing displayed content based on user identity. Apple's ability to achieve this without Face ID-level depth sensors suggests that facial recognition may also be possible in the future on the iPhone Duo (which currently relies on Touch ID), without the physical space traditionally required for facial recognition.
