OpenAI plans to launch a series of policy initiatives after the U.S. midterm elections to strengthen its AI regulatory footprint.
OpenAI reportedly plans to launch a series of policy initiatives and public relations efforts immediately after the U.S. midterm elections on November 3, in order to adapt to potential changes in Washington's political landscape and to influence the artificial intelligence policy debate in the 2028 presidential election. OpenAI Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane said the company has been preparing relevant policy proposals since August and expects to launch them during Congress's "lame-duck session" beginning on November 9. Specific measures include: promoting mandatory safety safeguards for the most advanced artificial intelligence systems, setting "speed limits" on AI development to ensure humans retain control; easing resistance to data center construction through community cooperation agreements and state-level legislative recommendations, and promoting the repositioning of new data centers as "AI compute parks"; expanding AI education and training and employment support to help workers cope with technological change; and promoting U.S.-led development of global AI standards based on democratic values. Lehane believes AI will become a core issue in the 2028 U.S. presidential election.
