Sharp declines in the share prices of several large companies at the heart of the artificial intelligence infrastructure boom have made life harder for investors who took part in their huge stock offerings. Intel, Alphabet and Meta Platforms fell on Friday after a round of disappointing earnings pushed their shares below the price paid by investors who bought into their share sales in recent months. The slide began on Wednesday when Alphabet reported earnings, with advertising revenue from its search and other channels coming in below expectations; Intel then disclosed problems in the supply chain for data centre components, further fuelling concerns. Both companies highlight doubts over whether the massive AI investment can be sustained. The market is already struggling to absorb large AI-related share sales and is also assessing whether the huge investments can long-term share price gains. The falls will further increase the difficulty for companies to raise the capital they need, and make the outlook even less clear for whether Anthropic can match or exceed the amount raised in SpaceX's record-breaking listing earlier this year in its IPO.
