Given Alphabet's (GOOG.O) disappointing third-quarter results and the sharp subsequent drop in its share price, which fell by more than 10% at one point in after-hours trading, Warren Buffett's last major stock investment during his tenure as Berkshire Hathaway's chairman is currently underperforming. In the first half of 2026, Berkshire aggressively bought Alphabet shares. In early June, Berkshire participated in Alphabet's $85 billion stock offering, purchasing $10 billion worth of shares at about $350 per share. Buffett said in July that buying Alphabet shares was his own decision. Berkshire's average cost for its Alphabet holdings cannot be determined at present, but it is very likely above $300 per share, and may even be close to $320. As of June 30, Berkshire held a total of 106 million Alphabet shares, worth about $30 billion based on the after-hours share price, below the peak of $37 billion reached in June. Alphabet is Berkshire's fourth-largest stock holding, after Apple, American Express and Coca-Cola.
