The global metals trading industry has seen explosive profit growth for a second consecutive year, with several major trading houses setting earnings records and metals traders making billions of dollars. According to people familiar with the matter, Trafigura Group, which is vying with Glencore for the position of the world's largest metals trader, posted a record profit of about $2 billion in its metals trading business in the fiscal year ended September. Glencore also recorded one of its best-ever earnings performances, but its overall results were weighed down by a $480 million provision related to its exposure to iron ore trader Radiant World. The huge profits made for a particularly lively LME Week, which concluded on Friday. Champagne flowed freely at the most important annual gathering of the global metals industry. Several metals traders said privately that they are enjoying the highest earnings of their careers while fielding job offers from competitors and newcomers seeking to share in the metals market boom. According to people familiar with the matter, Vitol, the world's largest commodity trading house, is also building out its metals trading business, which is expected to generate more than $100 million in profit this year. While that performance is clearly better than last year, it still lags behind major rivals such as Mercuria.
