Anthropic is in discussions with legal institutions to resolve a brand-new challenge: how AI agents should negotiate to secure the best deal outcomes for their human users. Two people familiar with Anthropic's thinking said the company is seeking advice from law firms, studying how lawyers conduct negotiations in a way that both represents client interests and takes fair outcomes into account. A person familiar with Anthropic's project said the company is exploring "negotiation norms" for model interactions. As intelligent systems continue to iterate, AI agents will represent users in dealing with other agents whose goals conflict. The person added that the company is also weighing how much human feedback agents should seek during negotiations, and how high a level of vigilance they should maintain toward other AI counterparts while avoiding falling into suspicious, conspiracy-theory-style judgments. Another person close to the company revealed that Anthropic has also explored a plan: having users issue signed documents to confirm to agents the matters entrusted and all the rules to be followed.
