The fiscal deficit is approaching $2 trillion. How great is the U.S. fiscal pressure?
On October 16 local time, the U.S. Treasury Department released the latest data showing that the federal fiscal deficit for fiscal year 2026 reached $1.99 trillion, an increase of $217 billion over the previous fiscal year and the highest level in five years. That figure even exceeds the annual economic output of some developed countries. Although the U.S. government's full-year revenue reached a record $5.4 trillion, spending grew even faster, reaching $7.4 trillion. Of that, debt interest payments amounted to as much as $1.36 trillion.
