According to South Korean media outlet SME Daily, industry sources revealed on the 28th that SK Hynix (SKHY.O) has commenced preliminary construction work for a semiconductor wafer fab in Japan's Tohoku region, with foundation work already underway at the site. The sources said it remains unclear whether the project will be operated independently by SK Hynix or in partnership with Kioxia, but the developments indicate SK Hynix's intention to enter the Japanese market. The company has also recently been asking South Korean component suppliers to expand supply in response to a memory chip supply shortage. Just one month ago, SK Hynix stated that the Japan memory chip wafer fab project was still in the evaluation stage, with no specific plans yet determined. If the reports are accurate, it means the project is advancing rapidly, with site preparation beginning in just one month. If ultimately realized, SK Hynix will establish memory chip production capacity in Japan's Tohoku region, forming a "triangular layout" for Japan's semiconductor industry alongside TSMC's Kyushu project and Japanese domestic foundry Rapidus's Hokkaido project. However, SK Hynix stated that the Japan memory chip wafer fab remains in the evaluation stage, with no further progress currently achieved.
