According to a report by French news agency 11, the Comprehensive News Alliance, a professional organization representing nearly 300 French media outlets, has protested against Google's launch of the AI Summary feature. The organization has filed a complaint with the French Competition Authority, as media outlets are generally concerned that this new service from Google will divert traffic away from their websites, thereby affecting advertising revenue. The incident stems from Google's introduction of the AI-generated AI Summary feature in France on July 22, which provides conversational summaries of search results through AI when users use the search engine. Although this feature allows users to quickly understand search results, the APIG believes it may lead users to abandon clicking on website links from search pages, which would undoubtedly impact the traffic and advertising revenue of media websites. APIG cites an evaluation report from the French Audiovisual and Digital Regulatory Authority, stating that once Google launches the AI Summary service in the European market, it could result in a traffic loss of between 33% and 38%.
