According to sources cited by Reuters, Google's (GOOG.O) parent company Alphabet is undergoing a major leadership restructuring at Google DeepMind, with some teams transferring from DeepMind to Google's corporate structure, further diminishing DeepMind's autonomy. Sources say that Google's co-founder Sergey Brin has encouraged core AI employees in recent months to "fully commit" to the Gemini model and to push forward with AI directions such as "recursive self-improvement." Following this adjustment, DeepMind's head Demis Hassabis will take on the role of chairman, with his deputy Koray Kavukcuoglu assuming leadership responsibilities. Google stated that Kavukcuoglu will have final decision-making authority on significant decisions at DeepMind. Sources indicated that due to internal testing showing that the new flagship Gemini model still lags behind competitors in areas such as programming, Google has postponed its release by two months.
