U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Becent recently stated in an interview with a local television station in Arizona that as geopolitical situations change, an increasing amount of energy transportation will bypass the Strait of Hormuz in the future. He believes that the Strait of Hormuz will gradually lose its strategic importance. Local media reported that Becent mentioned in the interview that, given Iran's attempts to control this vital waterway, the strait will not be able to return to its former state. He claimed that over the next two years, the strait will become a regular body of water, progressively becoming less significant. Becent stated that more than 50% and even up to 70% of the energy transported through the Strait of Hormuz will gradually be shifted to underground pipelines. Becent has previously expressed similar views, asserting that the Strait of Hormuz's status as a global energy chokepoint is diminishing. In Becent's view, the expansion and renovation of existing oil pipelines in countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE, as well as the upgrading of underground and land pipeline networks that bypass the strait, will largely replace the previous method of transporting oil via tankers through the strait.
