Jeff Dean, one of the earliest employees at Google (GOOG.O) and a key figure responsible for designing the company's artificial intelligence strategy over the past 15 years, is leaving the company to start an AI startup focused on scientific discovery. Dean joined Google in 1999 as the company's 30th employee. He will serve as the CEO of a new nonprofit organization called Discovery Loop, which aims to accelerate technological development by automating complex, multi-step scientific and engineering tasks. Joining Dean in this venture are senior Google employees Oriol Vinyals, Quoc Le, and Sanjay Ghemawat. Together, the four have driven significant advancements in mathematics and protein structure and are among the most cited researchers globally. The departure of these talents, including Dean, further exacerbates the recent trend of talent loss in AI at Google.
