During an interview with CNBC on Wednesday, Minneapolis Federal Reserve President Neel Kashkari, a voting member of the FOMC in 2026, stated that the Federal Reserve should "begin to gradually raise" interest rates now to reduce inflation and avoid the need for larger rate hikes in the future. Kashkari was one of three voting members who supported a 25 basis point increase at last week's FOMC meeting. He noted that currently, corporate profits are robust, and the consumer and job markets remain resilient, with no evidence that monetary policy has become significantly restrictive, making it the right time to start gradual rate increases. He emphasized that this does not advocate for aggressive hikes, but rather seeks "small steps" to prevent inflation from becoming entrenched, which could force more drastic policy tightening later. He added that he is uncertain about what actions the FOMC will take in September, as future data will play a crucial role. Meanwhile, Kashkari stated that Fed Chair Jerome Powell did not pressure him and told him: "Do what you think is right for the economy."
