South Korean e-commerce giant Coupang announced on Wednesday that, impacted by fines related to a large-scale user data breach, the company transitioned from profitability to a net loss in the second quarter compared to the same period last year. The U.S.-listed company disclosed in its announcement that, for the second quarter ending in June, it recorded a net loss of 865 billion won, while it achieved a net profit of 43.5 billion won in the same period last year. The majority of Coupang's revenue comes from its domestic operations in South Korea. In November 2025, the company experienced a data breach that affected over 37 million users, sparking strong public dissatisfaction after the incident came to light. In June of this year, the Personal Information Protection Commission of Korea imposed a record fine of 624.7 billion won, citing reasons including this data breach and the unauthorized collection of user online behavior data. Coupang's founder and chairman, Kim Beom-seok, stated that after the data breach incident, most of the lost users have returned, and consumer spending has recovered to previous levels.
