The world's smallest GPU has been tested: the 240,000 transistor TinyGPU v2.0 can now render 3D graphics.
On August 5, it was reported that the world's smallest GPU chipTinyGPU v2.0, developed by amateur ASIC/FPGA designer Pongsagon Vichithas successfully passed practical testing. This chip is manufactured using the SKY 25b process from the Tiny Tapeout community and contains approximately 240,000 transistors. In actual tests, it was able to handle computations such as smooth shading, back-face culling, and affine texture mapping for up to 1,000 polygons or triangles, successfully rendering 3D models and a rotating globe in real-time, with frame rates maintained between 7.5 to 15 FPS. TinyGPU v3.0 is expected to be launched in December 2026. The biggest technical highlight of version 3.0 is the introduction of programmable pixel shaders inspired by DirectX 8 PS 1.1, which supports SIMD 4-pixel parallel computation and an instruction set of 26 types, promising significant improvements in image quality and detail representation.
