The launch of weight-loss oral medications has become the most fiercely competitive battlefield in the pharmaceutical industry. Currently, it seems that Lilly is at a disadvantage in the competition with its rival Novo Nordisk. According to the latest data from the past week, since the launch of their weight-loss oral medication Foundayo in April, Lilly has captured about 11% of the market share for new oral prescriptions. The rest of the market share is held by Novo Nordisk's Victomie oral medication, which was launched in January. This is a notable development for the nearly $80 billion anti-obesity drug market, which is currently one of the hottest areas in the pharmaceutical industry. Lilly dominates in sales of injectables, and analysts had originally believed that their oral medication would also be a big success. However, one of the challenges Lilly faces is clinical research data: patients taking Novo Nordisk's oral medication experienced an average weight loss of 16.6% after more than a year of treatment, while those taking Foundayo only experienced an average weight loss of 12.4%. Analysts suggest that another reason for Lilly's slower progress is that the company took a long time to secure reimbursement access from health insurance plans.
