According to sources, OpenAI's first consumer-grade hardware will be a mobile, screenless smart speaker positioned as a new type of family computer for the AI era. It is expected to be released as soon as this year and hit the market in 2027. The device will feature a more advanced GPT-Live voice system that can engage in natural conversations, provide information proactively, and continuously learn user habits by combining email, environmental sensing, and other data to act as an "AI companion" supporting functions such as controlling smart homes, playing media, and responding to messages.
OpenAI hopes it will become the embodiment of ChatGPT and plans to release AI terminals that can replace smartphones, wearable devices, and household robots in the future. Meanwhile, Apple is suing OpenAI over trade secrets, with the lawsuit documents revealing that OpenAI poached more than 400 employees from Apple. The competition between the two companies in the AI hardware field is intensifying.
