An internal memo shows that Meta Platforms plans to begin production of an AI chip in September as part of its plan to increase total computing power to 14 gigawatts next year. The data center chip, codenamed "Iris," is part of Meta's AI Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA) fourth-generation in-house project. The company plans to use custom chips to enhance its AI capabilities that power the Facebook and Instagram social media platforms. The memo shows that the chip's testing took only six weeks and no major issues were found. This relatively fast progress signals a positive sign for this internal project that has been progressing slowly since its launch five years ago. Meta is customizing the chip according to its own needs and collaborating with Broadcom for design, and working with TSMC for manufacturing. This solution is expected to help the company reduce its significant computing costs and lessen its dependency on chip suppliers like Nvidia and AMD. There have been no reports on the completion of vulnerability testing and production time for this chip. Meta declined to comment.
