The U.S. Department of Energy recently introduced emergency measures, requiring some large electricity users in the Mid-Atlantic region, such as data centers, to immediately disconnect from the public grid and rely on their own backup power supply. This move aims to alleviate the unprecedented load on the current power grid and prioritize the use of air conditioning for residential areas to beat the summer heat. U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright emphasized in a statement that ensuring "affordable, reliable, and secure" power supply in the PJM regional transmission organization, the largest grid operator in the U.S., is a non-negotiable principle. Wright stated that the Trump administration is "utilizing all available tools" to ensure that residents in the Mid-Atlantic region continue to receive the electricity needed for cooling and daily living during the high temperatures.
