On Thursday, the European Union pledged an additional 18 million in economic assistance to Armenia and lifted some export restrictions on Armenian goods. Brussels' move aims to strengthen support for this South Caucasus country amidst Russia's trade pressure. Ahead of the June parliamentary elections in Armenia, Moscow imposed extensive trade restrictions on the country. In these elections, the ruling Civil Contract party won 49.8% of the votes. Russia has accused the West of meddling in the elections and, along with the Armenian opposition, has alleged irregularities in the election. These restrictions imposed by Moscow come as Armenia seeks closer ties with the West and aims to join the EU, hitting many of Armenia's key export products, including fresh agricultural products, flowers, fish, and wine. European Commission President von der Leyen said, "I know Armenia is still facing significant economic pressure from Russia. But rest assured: when our partners are under pressure, the EU will stand up you can trust us."
