Extreme weather is affecting AI. Global AI data centers are facing threats of extreme high temperatures.
CCTV financial news, according to a report from the American Consumer News and Business Channel website, a heatwave is sweeping through many countries, and global tech giants are also facing a serious challenge of ensuring the high-performance chips in artificial intelligence data centers can run continuously and stably. The report cited research data from a climate risk analysis agency, which stated that currently, up to 79% of the computing capacity in global data centers is threatened by various sudden climate disasters, including floods, extreme winds, and wildfires, which could lead to operational disruptions, increased downtime, and higher insurance and maintenance costs. Currently, major tech companies are realizing the challenges that climate factors bring to the operation of artificial intelligence data centers and are exploring solutions. Microsoft has stated that they are managing risks from extreme high temperatures and adverse weather conditions through factors such as site selection, improving redundant systems, and real-time monitoring. Last week, NVIDIA stated that their new artificial intelligence servers can operate in cooling liquid environments up to 45 degrees Celsius. NVIDIA stated that for every 1 degree Celsius increase in cooling liquid temperature, energy consumption of the cooling system can be reduced by about 4%.
