Media cited two unnamed sources who reported that OpenAI had discussed giving the US government a 5% stake. The reports stated that CEO Sam Altman has been actively negotiating with the US government on issues of public ownership, including meetings with President Trump, Commerce Secretary Lutenik, and Treasury Secretary Benett. Talks between the US government and OpenAI are still in the early stages of "conceptual" discussions.
