Report: Approximately one third of the global increase in carbon dioxide emissions in 2025 will come from the United States.
A report from the Energy Research Institute shows that by 2025, about one-third of the global carbon emission increase will come from the United States, as rising natural gas prices are forcing power producers to switch back to coal-fired electricity generation. Coal consumption in the United States increased by 10% last year, reversing the trend towards cleaner fuels and raising overall emissions. Global carbon emissions in the energy sector grew by 1.1% to reach 35.806 billion tons of carbon dioxide, with over one-third of the increase coming from the United States. Emissions in North America have reversed a 10-year trend of declining emissions by 0.7%. Global energy demand continues to rise, with total energy supply increasing by 1.7% compared to 2024, with renewable energy contributing the largest share. Renewable energy generation has increased by 9.1%, with solar energy generation surging by 30%.
