AI Empowers Efficiency: Germany Harnesses Artificial Intelligence to Solve Labor Shortage Dilemma
In northwestern Germany, a custom home builder used to process over 250 invoices a week, taking a full four working days to complete. Since introducing artificial intelligence last year, the time spent on this task has been cut in half. The company's managing director, Gert Terfels, said that the implementation of artificial intelligence is not intended to reduce staff, but rather to alleviate the labor shortage issue - the biggest challenge faced by Europe's largest economy in the coming decades.
"We plan to fully implement artificial intelligence to fill the manpower gap and relieve employees of their workload," Terfels said. "The team has embraced this technology, and quickly saw its practical value."
According to Bloomberg Economics research, after years of stagnant growth, artificial intelligence could contribute 0.2 to 0.7 percentage points to Germany's economic growth each year over the next decade, with a cumulative additional value of up to 323 billion. Bloomberg economist Anna Andrade pointed out, "Artificial intelligence is clearly a solution to Germany's growth dilemma. 30% of domestic positions can be enhanced by AI; with higher AI capabilities, that percentage could reach 60%, leaving enormous room for productivity improvement. However, this economic windfall is not set in stone."
