Report: The US government is requesting OpenAI to release the latest model GPT 5.6 in stages.
According to sources, after a request from the government of President Trump, OpenAI will release its latest artificial intelligence model GPT 5.6 in stages. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman spoke at an employee Q&A session on Wednesday, and this information was also revealed in a memo. OpenAI will first release a limited preview of GPT 5.6 to a few select partners, with Altman stating that this is the best path to a wide release of the model as quickly as possible. In a memo to employees on Thursday, Altman stated that during the GPT 5.6 preview period, the government will "approve access on a case-by-case basis." Altman mentioned in the memo, "We have made it clear to the US government that this is not our preferred long-term mode and will work with the government and industry to seek more sustainable solutions for future product releases." The request for a phased release came from communications between OpenAI and the US National Security Council office and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
