On June 24th, local time, OpenAI and Broadcom jointly released the first custom chip Jalapeo. This is a dedicated integrated circuit designed for large-scale model inference, with only 9 months from design to tapeout. In the partnership, OpenAI is responsible for architecture design, Broadcom is responsible for tapeout and network hardware, and Canadian electronics manufacturer Celestica provides board/rack integration support. The chip improves inference efficiency and reduces energy consumption by optimizing data flow. The chip engineering samples have completed laboratory validation, and are planned to be scaled up by the end of 2026, supporting a cluster of gigawatt-scale data centers.
