Heatwave puts pressure on the power grid, UK issues electricity supply warning.
Due to the impact of high temperatures, the British electricity grid operator has issued a rare summer electricity supply warning, which will take effect on Wednesday evening. The operator predicts a power reserve gap of 1.9 million kilowatts and has requested all power plants to fully release any excess generating capacity. When the grid's required safety buffer capacity is insufficient, such warnings are issued in the UK. The heatwave sweeping across the European continent has caused serious impacts on multiple countries' electricity grids. Electricity prices have sharply risen during peak hours in various parts of Europe; and as a key pillar of its electricity supply, several nuclear power plants in France have been forced to reduce their output. The British National Energy System Operator issued a statement on Tuesday evening, explaining that the grid warning is a routine measure to ensure power supply and does not indicate an imminent large-scale power outage. A spokesperson for the grid operator stated in an email declaration, "The power system's reserve capacity will enter a tight range, due to extreme high temperatures in the UK and Europe combined with insufficient wind power generation."
