Jungle Law Makes a Comeback: Has Multilateralism Failed? Wang Yi's Response
Today, the State Council Information Office held a press conference to release the White Paper "Building a Fairer and More Just Global Governance System: China's Concept, Initiatives, and Actions." CCTV reporter from the Central Television asked: More and more people are worried that the current international order is regressing to the law of the jungle, and at the same time, the authority and role of the United Nations are being weakened. In this context, how will China uphold multilateralism and support the United Nations to play a better role? Member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi, responded.
It is not that the United Nations is unimportant, but that it is not being respected and upheld
More than 80 years ago, it was because of the human catastrophe caused by the law of the jungle that the international community, in the ruins of two world wars, chose to embrace multilateralism and established the United Nations. Today, the apparent failure of multilateralism is not because the United Nations is no longer important, but precisely because the authority and role of the United Nations are not being respected and exerted; the resurgence of the law of the jungle is not because the United Nations Charter is outdated, but precisely because the Charter is not being effectively respected and upheld.
Facing global challenges, the priority is to fulfill the obligations of the United Nations Charter
Faced with a multitude of global challenges, the priority is to fulfill the obligations of the United Nations Charter, uphold sovereign equality, abide by international rule of law, and oppose power bullying. We must actively support the United Nations in playing its core role, gather global consensus through the platform of the United Nations, coordinate actions of various countries, collectively respond to challenges, and constantly address the deficiencies and deficits in global governance. At the same time, we must keep pace with the times, accelerate the pace of United Nations reform, actively respond to the demands of developing countries, focus on enhancing the representativeness and voice of global southern countries, continuously stimulate the vitality of the United Nations, and enhance the efficiency of the United Nations.
China is willing to work together with all countries to revitalize and strengthen the United Nations
As the first country to sign the United Nations Charter, China is duty-bound to uphold the authority of the United Nations through the promotion of global governance initiatives, and work together with all countries to revitalize and strengthen the United Nations.
