According to the Nikkei newspaper on June 14th, the Japanese government plans to launch a survey in Greenland, a Danish territory, this summer to develop rare earth and critical mineral resources. The aim is to identify the types and reserves of resources locally and pave the way for Japanese companies to invest. In November 2025, a joint official and private survey team consisting of officials from the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and representatives from trading companies visited an operating feldspar mine on Greenland. After confirming the commercial potential even in extremely cold conditions, they plan to send geological experts from the Japanese Energy Metal Mineral Resources Agency for a survey this summer. The target of the survey is to prepare for advancing rare earth mining, assessing both resource reserves and mining costs. Japanese government officials have high hopes for the diversity of mineral resources on Greenland. It is reported that actual key mineral extraction has not yet begun on Greenland, with American and European companies still in the preparation stages. Japanese companies may also have the opportunity to cooperate with these foreign companies in the future.
